This is not really a timely post because of me
giving advice for graduates this August is a bit off but anyway I will still
post this one and hope you can get something good out of it.
1. Forcing to Climb the Corporate Ladder
Ever felt that when a parent was asked where
do his/her child work after they graduate and you get a strong pride coming out
from that parent saying that his/her child works in an “office”?
By the way, let me have a disclaimer here that
there is nothing wrong with that. I experience the same thing with my family.
Blame it all to the usual Filipino norm that
having your children work on an “office job” will make you look like you’re successful.
My Advice?
Don’t ever think that other people’s success or
other people’s vision of success should also be the definition of your own success.
I am betting that there are a lot of people out
there who are happy and considered themselves successful even if they don’t have the status of a manager or a senior vice president.
Rather than staying at a job and sugar coat it as your stepping stone to a better position choose a career path that aligns well with your strength and
weaknesses.
I will elaborate more about strength and
weaknesses on the second bullet.
2.
Choosing the Right Career ( understand your
strength and weakness)
If you previously have gone to OJT’s, I think
that is the best time to evaluate what are your strengths and weaknesses.
Do you get along very well with other people who have direct supervision
towards the work you do?
Do you like working all by yourself?
Are you a team player or not really?
Stop following your friend and pass along CV’s
to where she passes hers’ because what you need to follow in choosing your
first job is to choose a career that
fits your abilities(aka Strength).
This is actually a win-win scenario for both
you and the company because you can able to excel more on the things that you want to do and give more value to the company you are working for.
As a newly graduate, I really don’t know which
job I wanted to pursue so I always tend to link my abilities to the course I took
which is Business Administration.
It turned out that is a big no-no for me,
because I am never an outgoing person and it exhausts me completely with
constant communication with clients.
My Advice
Job description is the best parameter that will
tell you if the job fits you best.
If you are like me, I’ll go running after a
title that is non-voice or back-office because that is me, that
is what I like to do best.
3.
Nourish Your Passion
Starting early right after graduation or even
earlier than that is the best time to know and nourish your passion.
Life is not just about career alone.
I think there is one thing that all people
enjoy doing and is passionate about.
Having a job that pays you is important but
feeding your soul with happiness by
doing the things that you love is one thing that will make you flourish as a
person.
Passion can be anything, it can be love for
food, travelling or writing.
Prioritizing the things you love the most will
fuel you up to be the best at the things that you do and that includes your
job.
Final Thoughts
In choosing the right Career after graduation;
Don’t
copy other people’s definition of success.
Know
yourself and identify your strength and weaknesses.
Job descriptions are your map as to whether you’re fit for the job or
not.
Start early with your passion. Nourish the things that you love doing
alongside with your job.
